How to View DWG Files Online Without AutoCAD
You do not need AutoCAD to open a DWG (Drawing) file. Thingraph DWG Viewer and CAD Viewer render AutoCAD drawings directly in your web browser using WebGL — free, with no desktop installation. This guide explains your options, what features you get, and how viewing differs from editing in AutoCAD.
Why use a browser DWG viewer instead of AutoCAD?
AutoCAD is the industry standard for creating and editing DWG files, but many people only need to view, measure, or share drawings — architects reviewing a contractor submittal, project managers checking a site plan, or clients previewing a design. A browser viewer lets you:
- Open DWG and DXF files without a paid AutoCAD license
- Work on any operating system (Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook)
- Skip large software downloads and IT approval cycles
- Share a drawing by sending a Google Drive link and using Open with
Thingraph viewers are read-only for 2D CAD: you can navigate, measure, annotate, and screenshot — not modify geometry like in AutoCAD.
Two ways to view DWG online (no AutoCAD)
Option 1: Upload from your computer
- Go to DWG Viewer (local) on cad.thingraph.site.
- Drag and drop your
.dwgor.dxffile, or click to browse. - The drawing loads in the browser. Use zoom, pan, layers, layouts, and measurement tools.
No Google account required. The file stays on your device — it is parsed and rendered locally.
Option 2: Open from Google Drive™
- Install DWG Viewer or CAD Viewer from Google Workspace Marketplace.
- In Google Drive, right-click the DWG file → Open with → choose the viewer.
- Sign in with Google once. The file opens in a new browser tab.

What can you do in the online DWG viewer?
- Zoom and pan — navigate large drawings smoothly
- Layers — show or hide layers in the drawing
- Layouts — switch between model space and paper space layouts
- Measurement — distance, area, angle with object snap
- Markup — arrows, shapes, text annotations (session-only, not saved to DWG)
- Screenshot — export PNG images
Browser and hardware requirements
Use a modern browser with WebGL enabled: Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, or Safari (recent versions). Very large DWG files may need more RAM and a discrete GPU for smooth performance. If rendering is slow, try closing other tabs or testing with a smaller sample from Examples.
Is my DWG file sent to a server?
No. Thingraph renders DWG content in your browser. We do not upload your drawing to our servers for processing. When opening from Google Drive, Google’s API delivers the file to your browser; Thingraph does not store a copy. Read more in Is CAD Viewer safe?
DWG Viewer vs AutoCAD Web — quick comparison
- AutoCAD — full CAD authoring, industry plugins, subscription cost, desktop or Autodesk web apps.
- Thingraph DWG Viewer — free viewing, measurement, markup; ideal for Drive workflows and quick review.
If you only need to see a drawing, a dedicated browser viewer is faster and simpler than installing AutoCAD.
